Jake Bugg - Lightning Bolt

I’m really, really, really into Jake Bugg. This boy has been tearing through the British music scene and I’m so pleased for him and the pop chart children because we have raw, organic talent dominating Radio 1 at last.

His lyrics are poetic in a very honest, Northern working-class kind of way. There’s something about his melodies and the stories in his songs that make me think his songs are going to be appreciated for many years to come; I don’t see Jake Bugg as a momentary fad, he’s a solid song-writer with a very classic sound. And he’s only nineteen!

Jake Bugg is a Nottingham lad who was more interested in football than music and first left his country last year to support Michael Kiwanuka in Paris. He seems like the least pretentious person ever, especially considering his quick rise to fame. In interviews he’s become known for his honest answers; when he was asked was it was like going to the Brit Awards, he replied: “Quite boring actually… they could have put some better acts on”.

His self-titled album is released in the US on April 9th!

Ugh, I love free stuff. I’d never heard of Bastille before this week but I’m inclined to believe that I should check out the rest of their catalogue (apparently consisting of two mixtapes released a short while ago and an album coming in late March). Other People’s Heartache, Part 1 and Part 2 (available for free download here and here respectively) are an amazing collection of cover/remixes —think Frank Ocean’s Nostalgia, Ultra but more Electronic than R&B— ranging from Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams to City High’s What Would You Do? (what a call back!!!). I’ve been jamming out to them for the last few days and I’m kind of in heavy anticipation of the release of Bad Blood, due out March 4. You can find Bastille on any number of sites via otherpeoplesheartache.com, which is a hell of a lot easier to say than to list all of their social media links here.

Anyway, see you guys next week. Hopefully I’ll be about 5lbs heavier from all the Valentines chocolate I’ll be receiving from my many many fans.

Wicked

Defying Gravity

Wicked (OCR) - Defying Gravity
Guilty Pleasures Week

Okay, lets get this over with. I love musicals. Always have, always will and I’ve always loved the soundtracks. In a lot of cases I know all the words before I’ve seen the shows. Albums are a lot more fulfilling when at the end of them you’ve listened to an entire story. My collection has Chicago, Spring Awakening, Avenue Q, Hairspray, West Side Story, Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Lion King, A Chorus Line, Phantom of the Opera, Sweeney Todd, Nightmare Before Christmas, Wicked and more. All of which I’ve either seen the movie or the actual play (three times for Phantom). I’m not even embarrassed about some of these. Avenue Q is one of the funniest musicals I’ve ever seen. Spring Awakening has an edgy modern rock sound for being based off a play that was banned when it was written in 1890. Hairspray is set in my hometown. Chicago is classic as well as West Side and Phantom. There’s definitely a time and place to listen to musicals/admit that you do. I guess now’s my time to own up.

I chose Defying Gravity because I still get chills when Idina Menzel hits that end note. Also Wicked has a lot of overall themes of sisterhood as well as a couple Glee covers, making it that much more embarrassing for me. Altogether, Wicked is a phenomenal musical (that I’ve seen twice) and would recommend to anyone but you won’t ever find me busting this song out in a group of friends… besides that one time it came on shuffle.

I hope you’re happy,

-Zach

The Novel Ideas

Seabird

The Novel Ideas - Seabird

I’ll switch up the genre this week. This isn’t the first time that I’ve posted these guys. After a stressful couple of weeks, I was really looking for some music to help me unwind today. This track was perfect. I often associate certain feelings or moods that can be hard to articulate to music. This is very much the case for just about every song by The Novel Ideas, this one in particular. When I’m stressed, Seabird takes me to a different place for a few minutes. It’s wonderful. Maybe it’ll do the same for you. Or, if you’re feeling fine, you can just sit and enjoy it. Go ahead. We’ll be here when you get back.
